Missing links – Davis Street tunnelling works

What are we doing in this area?

The upgrades in the area from Waratah Mills light rail station to Johnson Park include:

  • A new tunnel under Davis Street, Dulwich Hill
  • A boardwalk from the Davis Street tunnel to Johnson Park along the light rail corridor
  • Installation of new solar smart path lights
  • Public art in tunnel
  • Wayfinding signage
  • Upgrade of drainage at Terry Road

The construction method for the new pedestrian and cycling tunnel under Davis Street is a ‘top-down’ construction method, that requires specialised equipment and includes about 85 piles. Now that the piling is complete, the concrete has been poured for the tunnel roof, the waterproofing is installed, next the road surface can be reinstalled, and the bridge re-opened in October, approximately six months after closure. The tunnel is excavated from underneath. This is the fastest method to build the tunnel and ensures the shortest closure of Davis Street bridge.

When are we doing this?

Construction of the upgrade from Waratah Mills light rail station to Johnson Park has started in April 2024 and is anticipated to be completed in 2025.

Closure of Davis Street bridge

In order to complete these upgrades, Davis Street bridge is scheduled to be closed until October 2024, approximately six months after closure. Traffic management and detours are in place.
