John Goldsmith

Local creative - John Goldsmith

John Goldsmith dedicates his life to the production of art. He has received no formal art training, it comes from within. His work is described as "a frenetic style of drawing that is vibrant and intuitive". John has an inner need to draw and create.

A prolific interdisciplinary artist with great imagination, John works across any medium he has access to. His unconventional artworks and inventive models reflect and reference the unique world he lives in full of giant animals and dinosaurs, space travel with the Star Wars crew and his passion for cars and planes.

John has been creating art as a participant at various organisations that assist people with disability including Mary MacKillop Outreach, a day centre run by St Vincent de Paul Society for the last 15 years.

John exhibits each year in the Inner West Council's art exhibition Blooming Arts and in 2015 won the mentorship at Sydney College of the Arts 1st prize. Here John got the opportunity to work with a likeminded art tutor who encouraged him to explore new avenues. Using unorthodox canvas materials found discarded in the art school like pieces of hessian and a torn piece off a roll of tracing paper coupled with painting tools including icing bags, John created large scale artworks and attended his first life drawing classes in an art school environment.

Current work and inspiration

Due to Covid closures, John has not been able to attend his art making sessions at Mary MacKillop Outreach, but he is about to return and will launch into a prolific stream of artworks. John will be exhibiting two artworks in the upcoming Blooming Arts Exhibition held at the Chrissie Cotter Gallery. His work is driven by the process of making art.

"I am a good work painter and a good aircraft and motor car maker. I feel happy when I make art and I want to continue to paint and make aircraft" (John Goldsmith).
