Inner West Council will make history this year, marching in the world-renowned Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday 28 February for the first time as part of a new partnership that celebrates pride, inclusion and community.

Under the banner “Lots of love from the Inner West”, Council’s inaugural float celebrates Inner West Council’s ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and the LGBTQIA+ community.

It features some of Council’s key programs and achievements to support the LGBTQIA+ community including the Pride Centre and Pride Square in Newtown, Trans and Gender Diverse Swim Nights, Drag Story Time and the newly launched Pride History Walk.

Mayor Darcy Byrne said marching in the Parade marks an important milestone for the Inner West.

“The Inner West has long been a place where diversity is celebrated and equality is fought for. This year, we are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with our community in one of the most powerful public displays of solidarity.”

The landmark partnership with Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive and welcoming community for people of all sexualities and gender identities. It includes several events and collaborations such as free temporary workshop space for Mardi Gras float construction, Council participation in Mardi Gras Fair Day, and the relocation of the iconic Sissy Ball to Marrickville Town Hall.

“This partnership Is just the start. We’re committed to working with Mardi Gras on a longer-term relationship, as we look towards the festival’s 50-year anniversary in 2028.”

Up to 80 staff, Councillors and community members from some of Council’s Local Democracy Groups, will be marching proudly in Inner West’s inaugural float, wearing shirts with the Council logo and Council high-vis workwear.
