Greenway Street Libraries

The GreenWay Street Libraries Project has been jointly commissioned by Inner West Council and The GreenWay Program.

The project invited submissions by artists with a sculptural focus to propose designs to embellish three functioning street library structures. The structures, designed and created by the Leichhardt Men’s Shed, will provide a platform for intimate, small scale works that are site specific, and provide locals with a delightful, attractive focus for their new book sharing facilities. The small scale artworks will add to the growing program of public artworks installed as part of the envisioned GreenWay Sculpture Trail and will also complement the works installed in 2014 as part of the Inner West Light Rail Public Art Program.

The locations for the three street libraries are as follows:

• Café Bones, Hawthorne Canal Reserve (near Hawthorne Light Rail stop)

• Johnson Park, Dulwich Hill (near Arlington Light Rail Stop)

Artist team

Alessandro Berini and Adam Galea are the artist team selected for the GreenWay Street Libraries commission.

The artists have proposed three delightful site specific works that will provide a window into the activities played out both historically and currently at the three sites.

The image below represents the maquette and drawing submitted in the artist team’s application for the Lewisham West Street Library.

Their design celebrates the former industrial use of the site as a flour mill, before it’s converted into residential apartments.
