Good neighbour policy

Longstanding pubs, clubs and other venues are an integral part of the character, history and heritage of Sydney.

Council has a community responsibility and a statutory obligation to protect the amenity of residents. It also has a responsibility to support the successful operation of local businesses.

Council has implemented a good neighbour policy to ensure the longevity of live music venues and licenced premises while protecting the residential amenity of the Inner West.

This means that instead of immediately launching compliance or legal action when complaints are received, Council officers will mediate with complainants and venue operators to find solutions.

Council will also liaise with music industry peak bodies and the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing to seek their assistance in mediating disputes between venues and residents prior to engaging in legal action.
