Friday, 29 November 2019

Inner West Council is hosting Activate Inclusion Sports Day in partnership with Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW/ACT and Sport NSW on International Day of People with Disability on Tuesday, 3 December 2019.

Media are invited to attend. RSVP to the Communications team.

The Activate Inclusion program is a ground-breaking initiative focused on providing sporting pathways for students aged 5 to 18 years with a physical, intellectual or sensory disability.

Children who are often segregated from mainstream school physical education due to a lack of modification knowledge and adaptive equipment are given an opportunity to experience a variety of sport activities in a fun and inclusive environment.

This event caters for up to 200 students with a range of activities being showcased including boccia, cricket, dance, football, goalball, gymnastics, inclusive playground, table tennis, tennis and wheelchair sports.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said that Council was striving to make sure that everyone in the area could enjoy the physical and mental benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.

“Council has created a new Office of Sport to work to increase the sporting participation of a number of groups that are traditionally under-represented,” he said.

“That includes people with a disability, women and girls in particular.”

Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW/ACT Chief Executive Officer David Sexton said every child, no matter their level of ability should be able to enjoy the fun of playing sport.

“Every child deserves the chance to have a go at playing sport. We are proud to partner with Sport NSW and Inner West Council, so kids of all abilities have the opportunity to try different sports in a fun and inclusive environment,” Mr Sexton said.

“It’s wonderful the students can experience playing side by side, often for the very first time.”

Special guests on the day are Inner West co-Young Citizens of the Year, Zarni Tun and Arran Keith.
