Art on the GreenWay
28 March to 7 April
Ten artists have been commissioned to install artworks for exhibition for 11 days as a featured event of EDGE GreenWay in March 2018. The works will be on exhibition between Thursday 28 and Sunday 7 April, 2019.
IWC Environmental Art Award Winner Announced
Congratulations to the winner of the first IWC Environmental Art Award, Sally Kidall for her work entitled Portable Containment: where are we going continues...? This award recognised her eloquence in communicating something special about our relationship to nature, and draws attention to one of the many facets of our green jewel of the inner west - the GreenWay. This year's judges Rae and Yuri Bolotin from Big Ci in Bilpin said of the work - Sally’s work captures imagination of the viewer from the first encounter. It visualises a story of the local environment by combining a simple narrative with high quality craftsmanship. It involves the audience in an important discussion on the urban past and an uncertain future, giving us hope despite the scorched memories. The work is well positioned against the water backdrop and will provoke many conversations about the history of the settlement on these shores and its consequences to the natural landscape of the area.
People's Choice Award - Winner Announced
Congratulations to Aaron James McGarry for being selected "by the people" as the winner of the People's Choice Award. His work BIG Little Things was a supersized Superb Fairy Wren that delighted many and told the story of a "small yet beloved part of the inner west fauna." Aaron placed his large scale wren on top of an equally large scale crushed coke can, to assist us in being mindful about our role in assisting various regeneration projects that are restoring habitat and understory for these small birds. He states that it is our role to keep "the environment clean for these little birds and other wildlife" allowing them "to thrive."
All of these artists received votes from the public for their works and feedback received showed that they were all enjoyed. They worked hard to deliver you their version of an environmental artwork, and the Judges Rae and Yuri Bolotin, commended them all for the high quality of their efforts.
Selected Artists
Inner West Council is excited to announce the following artists have been selected for Art on the GreenWay 2019. As finalists these artists are in the running for winning the IWC Environmental Art Award and a People's Choice Award. All of these artists have proposed works which celebrate, discuss and uncover the natural environment along the GreenWay - an urban green corridor in the inner west. Join us, and cast your vote for your favourite work. Come and be delighted by all manner of shapes, colour and form, and engage with work that starts a conversation with you about our place in nature. As you can see from the titles of the works below, they will be poetic, contemplative and celebratory. Revel in the romance and love of nature, and see how these ten artists connect through their artform to the natural world.
