Gabby Malpas

As a Chinese adoptee raised by white parents in NZ, Gabby challenges the western and colonial genre of Chinoiserie with her own narrative in paintings and ceramics. The resulting works are beautiful and delicate with stories that draw the viewer in for a closer look. This is a calculated contrast to the sometimes confronting messages within her work.

Current work

Since 2014, Gabby has engaged in 'quiet activism' through her art: lavish and beautiful works to draw the viewer in for a closer look then engaging with thought-provoking messages based on my life experience as a Chinese adoptee raised in a white family.
Her works are joyful. She wants them to lift your mood. "If the messages make you think as well then that is a wonderful bonus".

Upcoming shows and workshops

the painted garden: stop asian hate will be on display at the Newtown ArtSeat until 17 Feb 2023.

Her work will be on show at the Baker Miller Pink Christmas Show from 4 Dec 2022.

She has Maxwell & Williams licensed products in store Australia-wide, Art prints available via Minus Art and Authority Creative.
