Community native nurseries

Inner West Council supports two community native nurseries, Marrickville and Rozelle Bay. In partnership with Council, volunteers collect seeds from remnant bushland and choose plants which are native to the Inner West LGA. These seeds are propagated and the seedlings are used in local bush restoration projects, used in plant giveaways to the public and schools, and also sold to the general public. These native plants are generally easy to maintain and require less water and care than many introduced species. They can also attract native wildlife to your garden.

Volunteers are essential to the success of both nurseries. Volunteers are given the opportunity to learn new skills and contribute to nursery operations. They participate in:

  • Seed collection
  • Seed cleaning and storage
  • Seed propagation
  • Tubing and potting
  • Composting
  • Pest and disease inspections
  • Maintenance of the nursery grounds

For plant lists, volunteering and other enquiries, email urbanecology@innerwest.nsw.gov.au or phone the nurseries supervisor on 0412 435 948.
