How Welcoming is the Inner West?
In September 2023, the Community Refugee Welcome Centre in partnership with Inner West Council, ran an activity with the theme of Welcome at the Culture X Festival to mark Welcoming Week.
As part of the activity, the facilitators asked Inner West Council residents 'What makes you feel welcome in the inner west?' and 'Describe to us a moment you felt your cultural diversity was not fully respected and appreciated?'
People responded that the inner west is a welcoming place which embraces diversity, however, people from migrant and refugee backgrounds feel that they are judged by the colour of their skin and that there is racism in the inner west. To move forward people must learn to value diversity.
