Totem skate workshops
Inner West Council has partnered with Totem Skateboarding to provide free skateboarding workshops at Sydenham Green, Dulwich Hill, Summer Hill and Annandale skate parks.
Inner West Council and Totem are both passionate about skateboarding and believe that learning from their experienced coaches will help develop self-esteem, personal identity and a positive self-image. Totem Skateboarding are based in Sydney and have an amazing team of coaches.
One of Council's objectives is to help break down the barriers for women and girls to participate in sport and recreation and to facilitate opportunities for those who want to access skateboarding as a sport or recreation.
Inner West Council and Totem Skateboarding began delivering female focused skate clinics
as well as mixed skate clinics in 2018 and plan to deliver more in 2019.
The female focused clinics have been hugely successful with the latest
event booking all 130 available spots in only 6 hours.
The day was a huge success with loads of positive feedback from girls
and their parents including that the skating workshops provided:
- New opportunities for girls to make friends with other skater girls;
- A feeling of accessibility to the skate park for girls;
- More diversity at the skate ramp with many more boys and girls skating together;
- Direct access to female coaches and professional women skaters;
- Direct access to female role models in skating;
- Heightened confidence in girls taking up skating for the first time; and
- A sense of empowerment for girls, finding a unique sense of self in developing new strengths and skills in skating.
