Council proposes White Bay Power Station as performance venue

Thursday May 23, 2024

Following the outstanding success of the Biennale of Sydney at White Bay Power Station, Inner West Council has now proposed that the facility made use of as a live performance and concert venue.

The incredible spaces within the Power Station lend themselves to a variety of live performance including theatre, live music and dance.

Making use of the Power Station as a live performance and concert venue will create a stunning new destination for Sydney concert goers and a boost for Sydney’s creative community.

“Having advocated for so many years to have the power station converted to an arts and cultural venue, it’s vital that we continue to progress this vision beyond the Biennale. Mayor Byrne said

“It will be obvious to the hundreds of thousands of Sydneysiders who’ve experienced the Power Station during the Biennale that the site has the potential to be a world class concert venue.

“You can just imagine how good it would be to see Jimmy Barnes belting out Working Class Man in the same space where generations of power workers toiled away.

“The White Bay Power Station can become the new jewel in Sydney’s cultural crown, providing a unique venue for musicians and performers from across Australia and the World.

“We’re proposing that approval for the Power Station to be used as a concert venue be expedited by Council and the NSW Government so that gigs can be scheduled there regularly in 2024.

“The Power Station itself could be declared a Special Entertainment Precinct, similar to the Enmore Road Precinct we have pioneered, so that it can be used regularly for live performance without being tied up in red tape.”

Council has written to the NSW Minister for Planning and the Arts and Night-Time Economy asking them to work with us to make the most of this once-in-a-generation opportunity.
