Henson Park to star in AFLW 2022 season
Monday 25 July 2022
Henson Park features significantly in the official 2022 NAB AFLW Season, which has just been announced by the AFL.
Marrickville’s Henson Park will host five games in Season 7, and is now the home ground and training base for Sydney Swans AFLW team in their inaugural year in the competition.
Inner West Deputy Mayor Jessica D'Arienzo said Australian Rules football lovers will be seeing more games at Henson Park this season than ever before.
“Council’s vision to upgrade Henson Park for top level sporting use has come to fruition,” she said.
“Our investment and belief in Henson Park to retain its status as an iconic ground for sport fans across Sydney has really paid off.
“We resolved in 2018 to help Sydney Swans women’s team make Henson Park their home ground and training base after they entered the AFLW and now here we are.
“I really urge footy fans in the Inner West to get down to Henson Park in October to see some magnificent matches,” Deputy Mayor D'Arienzo said.
Council supported the Swans application for entry into the league and has been working for the past few years to make Henson Park not only the home of the Newtown Jets but also a hub for women’s AFL.
Last year, Council spent $2.85m upgrading Henson Park turf and underlay soil to suit elite standard sport as well as improvements to irrigation, drainage and sport lighting.
More recently, Council announced a major funding deal for further upgrades to the grandstand, including female friendly change rooms, multi-use clubroom and lighting and broadcast facilities.
This included $5 million from the NSW Government, $2.5 million from the AFL, and a $2.5 million election commitment from Anthony Albanese.
The official 2022 NAB AFLW Season Seven fixture includes these matches at Henson Park:
• Saturday 1 October - GIANTS v Carlton at 12.10pm
• Saturday 8 October - Swans v Gold Coast at 1.10pm
• Sunday 16 October - GIANTS v Hawthorn at 3.10pm
• Saturday 22 October - Swans v Fremantle at 3.10pm
