New park for the Inner West

Friday 23 July 2021

The Inner West has a new park. Bell Reserve in Croydon was completed in late June.

Betty Bell bequeathed her home 'Balmoral' to Council with the intention that Council maintain the land as an open space reserve.

Betty (1923-2015) lived in ‘Balmoral’ with her parents Alexander and Christina and sister Heather.

“Betty is remembered as a caring resident who loved gardening – a kind person who shared her time and knowledge,” said Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne.

“In her will, Betty generously bequeathed the land to the community requesting it be maintained as an open space reserve.

“I’m delighted that the park is now complete.

“We’ve invested $500,000 to make Betty’s vision a reality. Bell Reserve, as it will now be known, includes new seating and picnic tables, informal play space, pathways, trees, shelter and a rain garden.

“I can’t thank Betty enough for this amazing gift and I’m sure it’s a park that Croydon locals will love for many years to come.

“We were determined to pay homage and thank Betty through the design, which features original trees from Betty’s garden, original front brick wall and gates, the door knocker and house numbers and a wash tub and plant pots from Betty’s garden.

“We’ve already received some great feedback from local residents,” Mayor Byrne said.

I…want to congratulate the council for the beautiful landscaping which is such an enhancement to the municipality. I love the stonework, the trees and the artistic furniture and it all comes together to make this a special place. I am sure that Betty Bell would be delighted with what has been done.

I just thought I would congratulate the Council on the beautiful park arranged on the land owned by the late Betty Bell. It was such a surprise to see the park when I was expecting another building on the site. It is peaceful, serene and creatively designed. Obviously some of Betty’s pots and shrubs are installed from her garden. I hope we can all look after it as it is a welcome addition to our neighbourhood. Thanks for your good work.

Just wanted to thank you and your team for opening up Bell Reserve, a welcomed outdoor space especially for little ones, during this lockdown! It is clear lots of clever planning and hard work has gone into it. I hope Betty Bell's family knows how valuable this space is for the community.

Bell Reserve is located at 188 Croydon Road, Croydon.
