Do more for Light Rail users, Council tells government

Monday 29 November 2021

Inner West Council is continuing to pressure Transport for NSW (TFNSW) to do more to minimise inconvenience for users of the Inner West Light Rail (L1 line).

In October 2021 Transdev announced that the Inner West Light Rail (L1 line) would be closed for an indefinite period and that replacement bus services would run between the Dulwich Hill Light Rail Stop and Central Station.

TFNSW has said that the closure could continue for up to 18 months as issues with the trams are fixed.

At last Tuesday’s Council Meeting, Councillors voted unanimously to writes to TFNSW asking that temporary bus stops have waterproof enclosures, accessible paths, directional signage and printed leaflets in all community languages and maps.

Council has also requested staff be allocated to each light rail station to assist residents with finding their way to temporary services.

“Because of our earlier advocacy work, we have an officer level working group comprised of staff from Inner West Council, staff from TFNSW and representatives from the Minister for Transport’s office,” said Inner West Mayor Rochelle Porteous.

“There has been some good work done, but there needs to be much more.

“We thank the Minister for making available replacement buses at half-price fares, but what with the very considerable disruption this has caused residents, we reiterate our request that all replacement buses should actually be free of charge,” Mayor Porteous said.

As part of last Tuesday’s night resolutions, Council now has a dedicated web page where residents can access up to date information, such as:

• Finding details about replacement buses

• Using the State Government's Trip Planner to plan trips

• Submitting feedback and concerns about the closure with TFNSW

• Contacting Council with any questions or concerns
