New art at Newtown ArtSeat by Jeff McCann

Wednesday 5 February 2020

Jeff McCann - artist, educator, artistic director and story-teller – is the latest artist to feature at Council’s ArtSeat.

Jeff's work ‘Fruit Party’ was installed today to coincide with Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

“The work is a celebration of my queer identity,” Jeff said. “Embracing the colloquial term ‘fruity’ and splattering it all over the ArtSeat.

“I feel this work is a perfect way to bring more fun and colour to the Newtown street while also celebrating being an inclusive neighbourhood,” Jeff said.

His practice celebrates inclusivity and queer identity through playful illustrative themes and wearable garments made from repurposed materials.

As part of the ArtSeat project, Jeff has created fruit GIFs on Instagram.

“People just have to search 'jeffmccann' in the GIF tab of instagram stories to find them. Hopefully people will take photos at or with the ArtSeat and use the gifs to make it more interactive,” he said.

Jeff's other work includes jewellery at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) and the Australian Design Centre (ADC).

He is also the décor designer for monthly queer party Honcho Disko held in the basement at the Imperial.
