Marrickville Library wins major architecture award

Monday 6 July 2020

Inner West Council’s magnificent new library in Marrickville has taken out the prestigious NSW Premier’s Prize at the 2020 New South Wales Architecture Awards.

Marrickville Library by BVN also won the Milo Dunphy Award for Sustainable Architecture, the People’s Choice Award For Life in 2020, and an award for public architecture.

According to the NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, “The project represents a vision for the future of public architecture, as a facilitator of community engagement…and a celebration of its historic and natural environment.”

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said he was particularly pleased that the library took out a public voted award.

“This beautiful public facility is more than a library, it’s a new town square for Marrickville which is helping to bring the whole community together.

“It has transformed Marrickville Road and is one of the biggest projects in Council’s history.

“It’s an inspiring space - I can honestly say it is one of most visually stunning libraries in Sydney.

“I also can’t wait until Inner West locals see the equally eye popping new Ashfield Aquatic Centre and heritage restoration of Dawn Fraser Pool, which are set to open in coming months.”

When Marrickville Library and Pavilion opened in August 2019, it represented a new era in library services for the Inner West, all housed in a beautiful structure that incorporates the heritage listed buildings of the old Marrickville Hospital with soaring new spaces.

The NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects 2020 New South Wales Architecture Awards was held on Friday 3 July and for the first time was livestreamed, allowing the public to freely join what is normally a members-only event.

Projects that received a named award or architecture award will now progress to compete in the National Architecture Awards.
