Council says, "Go take a hike!"

Wednesday 22 April 2020

Council is urging Inner West citizens to make the most of their COVID-19 isolation exercise time by discovering the many walks, running and cycling routes available to them.

Council is asking people to try out new areas amid worrying crowding on popular paths such as the Bay Run.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said while it was important for everyone to get out and exercise, "If safe distancing isn’t adhered to, access to the Bay Run may need to be restricted.

"Stay away from popular and crowded areas. Go to a quiet park or walk around the block rather than crowded spaces.

"Council has lots of suggested walks, and other cycling and running routes - why not explore a part of the Inner West you may not be familiar with?

“Any walk along the Balmain foreshore offers picturesque views of Sydney Harbour. The Cooks River corridor, which was upgraded last year, also offers an opportunity for some seclusion right in the middle of the Inner West,” Mayor Byrne said.

Other routes can be explored by downloading the Out and About in Leichhardt map, the Staying Active in Marrickville map and the Ashfield Cycling map, all of which can be downloaded from Council's website.

As well, Council has several self-guided walks, including:

⦁ Balmain walking tour

A snapshot of the peninsula’s industrial heritage and has been developed by Council with input from community volunteers. The free MP3 audio files and accompanying map guide is available on Council's website.

⦁ Norton Street historical walking tour

Covering notable sites and infamous businesses in the heart of Leichhardt. Narrated by historian Sue Tronser from the Heritage Group of Leichhardt District and compiled by local artist Patch Sinclair the tour offers an insight into the colourful history of the area.

⦁ Tom Uren trail

A two hour walk covering the Balmain of Tom Uren, the place where he was born and returned to enjoy the final years of his life.

⦁ Perfect Match street art walking tour

Discover amazing art on the streets of the Inner West. Every year, Council commissions at least 20 new public artworks.
