Council partners with 22nd Biennale of Sydney

Friday 6 March 2020

Council is partnering with the 22nd Biennale of Sydney to present a series of residencies, performances, talks, installations and exhibitions throughout the Inner West.

Themed ‘Nirin’ (a Wiradjuri – Aboriginal word for “edge”), the 22nd Biennale of Sydney runs 14 March to 8 June.

The partnership will further spotlight the Inner West’s cutting-edge creatives and support artists who make up the local cultural ‘eco-system’ - home to more arts workers per head than anywhere else in Australia.

The Biennale partnership includes:

Artist Residency, Thirning Villa, Ashfield: 29 February to 22 March 2020

Cape Town (South Africa) collective, Breaking Bread, will host gatherings and exchanges with local and international artists and the wider community.

Proposing alternative modes of creative practice, with food and knowledge sharing at its core, the collaboration will culminate in an event at Sydney Observatory on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March.

• The Flag Project at Iron Cove Bay: 29 April to 15 May 2020

A large-scale art installation first installed at Barangaroo during Sydney Festival, the spectacular 'Proclamation’ art installation of 250 Aboriginal flags links community to ideas about land and country, belonging and possession.

The Flag Project will fly across Lilyfield Pedestrian Bridge and surrounds, with help from Council and the community. A free Community Gathering on 29 April at 10am, the 250th anniversary of Cook’s landing, will act as a cleansing and welcoming ceremony.

• Brian Fuata at Newtown ArtSeat, 11 March to 3 June 2020

Brian Fuata’s site-specific improvisations, using the image of the ghost as narrative departure will feature at Biennale on Sunday 11 April. Meanwhile, his ArtSeat artwork will be unveiled on 11 March.

Reading Oceania artist residency at Patyegarang Place, Marrickville Library Pavilion, 18 May to 23 May 2020

Free performances and readings on Saturday 23 May, 2pm – 5pm. Spearheaded by Seini ‘SistaNative’ Taumoepeau, Reading Oceania: Revising the Ritual of Oceanic Oratory, is a performative feast that explores collective navigational processes and ethics deeply anchored in Oceanic Indigenous experience.

• Unbound Collective artist residence at Petersham Town Hall, 24 May to 8 June 2020

The Collective’s performance at Sydney Observatory at the end of May explores the spaces that have historically excluded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
