2020 Refugee Week virtual event

Friday 12 June 2020

Inner West Council will mark 2020 Refugee Week (Sunday 14 June - Saturday 20 June) with a virtual event: Celebrating the Year of Welcome.

The Inner West is home to the Community Refugee Welcome Centre (CRWC), a Council initiative which opened in 2017. It is the only welcome centre of its kind in Sydney.

The CRWC provides a place for connection between the local community and refugees, and people seeking asylum through a range of programs in a safe and supportive space.

The Refugee Week virtual event will feature stories of welcome told through food, culture and art by people from refugee backgrounds and volunteers at the CRWC.

Everyone's invited to take part. Go to www.innerwest.nsw.gov.au/RefugeeWeek to find out how.

Inner West Council’s virtual event: Celebrating the Year of Welcome:

• First Nations Welcome to Country

• Mayor message of welcome

• Virtual art exhibition featuring people from refugee backgrounds

• My Plate, Your Plate – recipes from people from refugee backgrounds, together with a story of what that dish means to them

• Stories of Welcome – Refugees and volunteers tell their stories of being welcomed and welcoming at the Welcome Centre, including Maryam who will share her story of becoming a successful entrepreneur thanks to the support of the Refugee Welcome Centre

Multidisciplinary artist Elham Marvi, who came to Australia five years ago from Iran, is exhibiting as part of the Refugee Week online exhibition.

She says her art, “Springs from inside of every individual and my work style reflects my lifestyle these days. Instability and my continuous struggle for certainty have a huge impact on how I express myself through my artworks."

The event has been organised in partnership with Community Refugee Welcome Centre, The Third Space, The Refugee Art Project, Damon Amb and Refugee Council of Australia.
