Residents urged to nominate a Sydney Harbour site for Clean Up

Monday, 18 February 2019

Inner West Council is encouraging local residents and community groups to nominate and register an Inner West harbour Clean Up site.

2019 marks thirty years of Clean Up Sydney Harbour, the precursor to the hugely successful Clean Up Australia Day.

Clean Up Australia Day (CUAD) is the nation's largest community-based environmental event. The key dates for CUAD 2019 are:

• Clean Up Australia Day – Sunday, 3 March
• Schools/Youth Clean Up Day – Friday, 1 March
• Business Clean Up Day – Tuesday, 26 February

Every year, around 1,000 local residents collect more than five tonnes of waste from our roads and waterways as part of CUAD.

“I want to congratulate and thank all the community groups, and all the individual volunteers for putting in the hard yards, making our Inner West neighbourhoods more pleasant, and reducing litter and waste,” Mayor Byrne said.

“Clean Up Australia is excited to have the support of Inner West Council in helping us celebrate 30 years of Clean Up Sydney Harbour,” said Terrie-Ann Johnson, Managing Director, Clean Up Australia.

“This special event marks an important milestone and with so many activities around the harbour, it is a wonderful tribute to the legacy Ian Kiernan AO has left to the community.

”We can’t wait to showcase the harbour together and celebrate the efforts of volunteers who have looked after this beautiful asset for thirty years,” Ms Johnson said.

Citizens are asked to ‘Create a Clean Up’ (register a site) or ‘Join a Clean Up’ (volunteer at a pre-registered site). For site registrations, or find a site to volunteer at, go to www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au.

CUAD provides each site supervisor with waste bags and promotional materials upon registration, as well as essential equipment such as syringe containers, gloves, high vis vests, and basic first aid kits, while Council organises extra waste services to help dispose of the CUAD refuse.
