Lunar New Year in the Inner West

Inner West Council will celebrate the Year of the Earth Pig with a series of events culminating in the annual festival at Ashfield Civic Centre.

Council’s 2019 Lunar New Year festivities commence on Saturday, 9 February with lion dancing and Chinese painting and calligraphy demonstrations and talks and ends on Saturday, 23 February. Everyone’s invited to these free events:

• Lunar New Year Festival featuring lion dancing
Delmar Gallery, Trinity Grammar School, 144 Victoria Street, Ashfield, Saturday, 9 February, 3:30pm

• Lunar New Year Festival featuring lion dancing
Alex Trevallion Plaza, Marrickville Road, Marrickville, Saturday, 16 February, 12 noon

• Lunar New Year Festival featuring lion dancing, God of Wealth, jugglers, Martial Arts, traditional music and dance
Ashfield Civic Centre, 260 Liverpool Road, Ashfield, Saturday, 23 February, 11:30am

• Speaker Series - The beauty of Chinese painting (In Mandarin and English)
Ashfield Civic Centre, Activity Rooms 3 and 4 (ground floor), Saturday, 9 February, 10am-12 noon.

A bi-lingual talk about the history, techniques, form and structure of Chinese painting by Chinese artist Su-bin Xu and her translator and student, Sarrah Huang from the Australian Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Art Institute. Book

• Make and Create - Calligraphy and painting demonstration
Ashfield Civic Centre, Activity Rooms 3 and 4 (ground floor), Saturday 9 February, 1-3pm

Established artists from the Australian Chinese Artists Society demonstrate this ancient practice. Calligraphers in attendance: Wen-lu Zhu and Herry He Wang. Artists in attendance: Su-bin Xu, Ding-xian Luo and Sarrah Huang. No bookings required.

• Make and Create - Making a fabric flower
Local History Room, Ashfield Library, Friday, 15 February, 10am-12 noon
Balmain Library, Monday, 18 February, 10am-12 noon
Marrickville Library, Wednesday, 20 February, 10am-12 noon

Join Nuong Thi Tran from the Vietnamese Women’s Association for fabric flower making craft. Book at eventbrite.

• Make and Create - Make a happy pig

Leichhardt Library Meeting Room, Wednesday, 20 February, 2-4pm

• Film Club - The Grandmaster
Marrickville Library, Tuesday, 5 February, 10:30am

2013 Hong Kong-Chinese martial arts drama film based on the life story of the Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man. Book at eventbrite. 

• Film Club - A Simple Life
Leichhardt Library, Thursday, 14 February, 6pm

2011 Hong Kong drama. A film producer helps care for his family's lifelong servant after she suffers a stroke and must move into a nursing home. Book at eventbrite. 

• Film Club - All in This Tea
Ashfield Library, Thursday, 28 February, 10:30am

2007 documentary follows the American tea connoisseur David Lee Hoffman as he travels to remote tea-growing areas of China. Book at eventbrite.
