Haberfield set for major boost

Thursday, 21 February 2019

Haberfield’s main streets and economy is set for a major boost with the Haberfield Centre and Library and Mervyn Fletcher Hall upgrade.

Inner West Council will spend nearly $4 million on significantly upgrading the Centre and Library, its community rooms and garden and refurbishing the Hall.

Council asked Haberfield residents last year about their priorities for community facilities, after successfully negotiating a $2.5 million contribution from the Sydney Motorway Corporation.

The money was earmarked to benefit the community which has been adversely affected by WestConnex.

“Haberfield citizens told us they wanted the Centre and Library and the hall to be extensively upgraded, so that’s what we are doing,” said Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne.

“Investing in our libraries is a Council priority. They are often the most well-used and valued public facilities in the community.

By upgrading and improving the Centre and Mervyn Fletcher Hall, we will in turn bring in more people to the heart of Haberfield, giving a boost to the main street and surrounding businesses,” he said.

The Haberfield Centre and Library upgrade will include:

• Improved accessibility including a new lift, ramp in the library and accessible toilets
• Redesigned library space and interiors to reflect a contemporary library service
• Better connection between the library and community space via an upgraded courtyard
• New music performance/rehearsal space and kitchen facilities on level one
• New services including air-conditioning
• Better shading to the library northern wing
• Improved landscaping
• Stronger identity and presence to the street with active entry and new hall wing
• Painting of interiors; and replacement of carpets, shelving and furniture

The Mervyn Fletcher Hall upgrade will include:

• Roof replacement including guttering
• Removal of asbestos eaves
• Replacement of window and door frames
• Internal/external painting where required
• Renewal of floor
• Improved toilet facilities
• New energy efficient light fittings
• Renewal of ramp at the Ella Centre entrance

Council is preparing detailed designs and will lodge a development application (DA) by July 2019. Construction is expected to commence by end of 2019. The Haberfield Centre and Library will be closed for approximately 12 months.
