Council’s Office of Sport up and running

Thursday, 21 March 2019

Inner West Council is pleased to announce that Carla Stacey has been appointed as Coordinator of the newly created Office of Sport.

Council’s new Office of Sport will help local sporting clubs and organisations to address community health and wellbeing, as part of Council’s commitment to a healthier Inner West.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said that the Coordinator’s role was to transform the relationship between Council and sports clubs into a strategic partnership to create a healthier community.

“A critical area for the Coordinator will be increasing participation of some groups that are currently under-represented in organised sport,” he said.

“We want to see more girls and women, people from disadvantaged backgrounds, seniors and people with a disability involved in sport enjoying the health and social benefits of participation in sport.

“The establishment of the Office of Sport comes in addition to our $65 million investment in sports, recreation and aquatic facilities across this term of Council.”

Ms Stacey’s background is in building the capacity of membership organisations to achieve their goals, be sustainable and deliver a lasting impact.

She is an experienced researcher, strategist and community engagement professional. Carla has a history of working with, and within, volunteer organisations and has deep connections with local community sport and schools in the Inner West.

She is a former Marrickville Council Citizen of the Year. She was nominated for using her “professional skills to improve her local community”.

“I am looking forward to supporting the hardworking volunteers across the diverse range sporting clubs active in our community,” Ms Stacey said.

“Our aim is to give every resident the opportunity to participate in organised support. The benefits will be a healthier, more connected community.”
