Nominations open now for Pride Seats dedications

Friday, 8 June 2018

Inner West Council is calling for nominations for the new ‘Pride Seats’ dedications.

Inner West people, groups or organisations that have campaigned for, or contributed to, LGBTIQ rights will all be considered.

The new Pride Seats will be installed at high profile locations throughout the Council area. The dedications will be in the form of a plaque or signage.

“Our LGBTIQ residents are a strong and vocal part of our community, and they’ve played a huge role in shaping the character of our area, as well as driving the successful vote for marriage equality,” said Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne.

“The Pride Seats celebrate the fact that the inner west occupies a central place in Australia’s LGBTIQ history,” he added.

Street Furniture Australia, who is providing the seats, said its donation was an acknowledgment of Council’s long-term advocacy on behalf of the inner west’s LGBTIQ community.

“I was delighted to present this donation to Council to recognise our support for marriage equality, and celebrate the love and diversity at the heart of our inner west,” said Cr Pauline Lockie.

Each Pride Seat will be dedicated to an inner west person, group or organisation that has campaigned for or contributed to LGBTIQ rights.

These local activists and change-makers will be recognised with a unique plaque at each seat.

“The inner west has played a key role in Australia’s queer history, and this is a lovely way to recognise the incredible contribution our residents have made to LGBTIQ rights,” said Councillor Lockie.

The possible high-profile locations, one in each ward, are:

  • Near the post office on Darling Street, Rozelle
  • Outside Norton Plaza on Norton Street, Leichhardt
  • In front of The Hub on King Street, Newtown In Lackey Street Piazza, Summer Hill
  • Outside the Library or Town Hall on Marrickville Road, Marrickville
  • Nominations open Friday, 8 June and close Sunday, 8 July, to coincide with Sydney Pride Festival.
