New Deputy Mayor for Inner West Council

Wednesday, 12 September 2018

Inner West Council elected Councillor Victor Macri (Ind) as the new Deputy Mayor at its meeting last night.

Councillor Macri is a former Mayor of Marrickville Council (2012-13). He replaces Councillor Julie Passas.

Councillor Macri said he was pleased and proud to represent the local community as Deputy Mayor.

“I am very grateful for the support of the people of the Inner West, and this is something I am determined to reciprocate,” he said.

“After a lifetime of association with the Inner West, I now find myself helping to lead our strong and innovative Council, and this is not something I take for granted,” he added.

Victor Macri, who was first elected as a Councillor in 2004, was born in King George V hospital in Camperdown in 1964. His family's association with the Inner West goes back to the 1930s.

He was educated at St Brigids Primary School and De La Salle Casimir College, both in Marrickville, and Christian Brothers at Lewisham.

The keen sportsperson is a member of the Marrickville Chamber of Commerce and in his free time, he likes to make models, cycle and play touch football.

He has represented Marrickville in athletics, played Rugby League for the Gladstone Hotel and Newtown SG Ball, played soccer for Marrickville Red Devils Soccer Club and is the Newtown Jets “biggest fan”.

He was responsible for the Civic Reception for the Newtown Jets after they won the New South Wales (NSW) Cup on Sunday, 30 September 2012 - the first time they won the Grand Final since 1943.

He was also the instigator of the ‘Sporting Walk of Honour’ in Marrickville Park.

Victor has worked as a hairdresser in Marrickville Road since 1983. Local citizens are constantly dropping in to share their community concerns.

“The most important part of representing the people of the Inner West is listening to their views on issues so I can deliver relevant and responsible decisions,” he said.

“I want to continue being known for always taking a common sense approach, revitalising our shopping strips, improving the environment – especially the Cooks River – working with the community, and helping people,” Councillor Macri said.
