Main street parking meters permanently turned off at night tonight

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne has announced that from today main street parking meters in Leichhardt, Rozelle and Balmain shopping strips will be turned off after 7pm.

“This change to parking meters will send a clear message to visitors and residents that our area is open for business,” he said.

“The meters have been reprogrammed and signs updated, so the parking meters will now be turned off after 7pm every night,” said Mayor Byrne.

“As mayor of Leichhardt I introduced 30 minutes of free parking to all our main streets.

“At the last election, I promised to turn off the meters at night and I’m very pleased to have delivered on that promise so quickly.

“We need to give residents and visitors an incentive to come back to our main streets,” he said.

“The truth is there are more empty shop fronts along Norton Street in Leichhardt and Darling Street in Rozelle and Balmain than in the past.

“We must re-establish the vibrant main streets the Inner West has always been famous for.

“Local businesses have been telling me that turning parking meters off at night will be a real incentive for customers coming into their restaurants and shops,” said Mayor Byrne.

Local businesses have backed the move, saying will it will have positive impacts on the Inner West's night-time economy.

Con Darnouras, owner of Bar Italia in Leichhardt, praised Council for the parking initiative.

“Cost of living is so high in Sydney - people simply can't afford to fork out additional money on parking, so we are finding people are going elsewhere where there are no parking meters.

“This policy will be a massive relief for businesses in the area - customers will no longer have to rush and can soak up the entire experience,” said Mr Darnouras.
