Leichhardt Oval the star in fan’s film tribute

An emotion charged short film entitled ‘Leichhardt Oval – From The Fans’ will screen as part of a special ‘Pics in The Parks’ evening event on Friday 2 March at Leichhardt Oval.

With gates to open at 6.30pm, this free event will start with activities with Wests Tigers, some especially for the kids with a special unveiling of a plaque dedicated to Rugby League legend Dennis Tutty at 7:15pm.

The films will kick off with a short film screening of the Leichhardt Oval documentary, followed by a screening of the feature film ‘Rocky III’ to cap off a great family night out.

‘Leichhardt Oval – From The Fans’, released late last year by Inner West Council and AllStar Productions, is narrated by former Balmain Tigers and NSW Captain Wayne Pearce and includes stirring interviews with former Tigers legends including Garry Jack, Steve Roach, Paul Sironen, Aaron Woods and Robbie Farah.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said the film will get the dream screening it deserves when Wests Tigers fans gather to watch it next week at the club’s spiritual home.

“As a local Tigers fan himself, Hans Bishop has captured the spirit and passion of the players and fans in his stirring tribute to Leichhardt Oval,” he said.

“This film shows why the push to kill off suburban rugby league grounds is so wrong and why Leichhardt Oval must always be preserved as a spiritual home of the Wests tigers,” he said.

“As Mayor of the former Leichhardt Council, I initiated the production of this film and as Mayor of the new Inner West Council I’m determined that we continue the fight to keep Leichhardt Oval open as an NRL ground.

“The Rugby League hierarchy and the State Government should stop and listen to the passion expressed by fans and players in this film and remember what’s most important about the game.”

Filmmaker Hans Bishop said that the story of Leichhardt Oval is about preserving a part of local history that cannot be lost.

"Leichhardt Oval has carried the hopes and passions of the people of the Balmain area for over 80 years,” he said.

“The Balmain Tigers and, now, the Wests tigers represent the heart of this tight knit community. This film demonstrates the deep feelings players, fans and the local residents have for their beloved Leichhardt Oval".

The film was commissioned in 2016 and includes historic footage of games and fans, as well as modern day interviews on game days over the past 18 months.
