EDGE to launch in Ashfield

Wednesday, 22 August 2018

EDGE, a rolling series of arts events and activations in 2019, will be launched by Council to the community in an amazing night of music, projection, paste-ups and pop up performances in the Ashfield forecourt and surrounds on Thursday, 6 September 5pm-8pm.

This FREE EDGE opening night party features art and sound installations, light projections, live music, dance and performances produced by contemporary cutting edge artists working with community groups.

Headline act Worlds Collide will encourage the audience to groove to the new urban fusion sounds of Western Sydney.

The exterior of the civic centre will light up with the life stories of ten local people with giant paste and pop up installations featuring at Ashfield Shopping Centre and Ashfield Station plus the Ashfield civic centre foyer will be a hive of colour and activity.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said EDGE can help make the inner west the independent arts capital of Australia.

Council is presenting EDGE as a new arts and cultural program to shine a spotlight on our local artists working with diverse communities.

“Through community, arts and businesses partnerships we can express our local identity, enhance our neighbourhoods and boost the economy.”

Cr Byrne said Council is committed to supporting local creatives through EDGE.

“We understand that to achieve our objectives, it has to be a partnership between Council and the existing creative enterprises. It’s not something that we can hope to achieve on our own,” he said.

“We want EDGE to build over the years to come.”

The EDGE arts industry launch at the iconic Enmore Theatre recently attracted hundreds of artists, performers, technicians and events professionals, who came together to create concepts for activations throughout 2019.

Though the EDGE launch focuses on Ashfield next month, more activations and events along the Greenway, Sydenham Creative Hub, Ashfield laneways, Newtown and Rozelle will be central to the expansion of EDGE in 2019.

The EDGE community evening launch on Thursday, 6 September from 5pm to 8pm in Ashfield’s town centre will be followed by the Sacred Music Festival from Friday to Sunday (7 September to 9 September) in Ashfield Town Hall.
