Anita Fricek: In the Community Gardens at CCG

Anita Fricek’s solo exhibition In the Community Gardens is coming to Chrissie Cotter Gallery in two weeks’ time.

The exhibition is the outcome of Anita’s time as resident at Council’s Thirning Villa in Ashfield, and focuses on connections between people and plants formed through communal activity.

“Community gardens operate locally, but are part of a global movement that strengthens neighbourhoods, provides seasonal organic products, and are a place where communal work and experimentation take place in cooperation with local councils,” she said.

Anita notes how the change from her home in Vienna to life in Australia has impacted on her work. “Flying across the world to do my residency and show in Sydney, transitioning from winter to summer, to the bright light, the scent of blooming flowers, and the birds with their loud cries is a pretty strong influence.”

“I am aiming to communicate a beautiful, strong, affirmative answer to life through my work, an answer found in friendship and equality. My work is therefore also a political quest, one that begins from a sense of social responsibility.”

In the Community Gardens is at Chrissie Cotter Gallery, Pidcock Street Camperdown from Thursday 18 January to Sunday 28 January

Opening night: Thursday 18 January, 6pm – 9pm

Gallery hours: Thursday to Sunday, 11am–4pm
