Registrations open soon for 2017 Garage Sale Trail

Tuesday 8 August 2017

Registrations open Thursday 10 August for the 2017 Garage Sale Trail, one of Australia’s biggest community events.

This year for the first time the Trail will be held over two days – Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October.

Inner West Council is an official supporter of the event - a weekend of simultaneous garage sales across the country hosted by households, schools, community groups and other organisations.

Council is encouraging residents to declutter, reuse, meet their neighbours - and make some money at the same time.

Last year 5,885 Inner West Council residents reported participating in the Garage Sale Trail, either as a buyer or a seller.

Inner West Council hosted 513 sales which attracted 5,280 shoppers and made a profit of $12,595.

The average seller parted with 46 items.

The Trail is a natural fit for Inner West Council. Council’s waste strategies encourage reducing consumption and reusing and recycling as much as possible, so as to achieve a more liveable, sustainable community.

As well, the Trail has proved to be an effective community-builder, with Garage Sale Trail participants reporting that they met an average of 22 neighbours on the day – and stayed in touch with around half of them.

Plus, the Garage Sale Trail raises awareness generally of recycling.

Seventy-four per cent of last year’s participants say they now think differently about waste and their own role in reducing it.

Local inner west Vinnies stores reported that the Garage Sale Trail coincided with “a heightened awareness of recycling”, that their stories were busier than usual, and that they saw more quality donations during this time.

Registrations for the Trail can be completed at www.garagesaletrail.com.au
