King George Park Amenities Building Set to Open

The unveiling of a new $1million amenities block at King George Park sporting ground on Saturday 27 May in Rozelle will be welcomed by local sports club players, parents and children.
Administrator Richard Pearson said the new facility featuring clubroom space and upgraded canteen and BBQ facilities as well as an outdoor covered area overlooking the ground showcases Council’s ongoing support for junior sport in the inner west.
“This new amenities block in particular will be a great addition to the grass roots sporting infrastructure needed by the local residents of the inner west,” he said.
“King George Park is one of our most popular sporting grounds used throughout the sporting year by thousands of local juniors from the Leichhardt Saints Football Club, Balmain Little Athletics and the Leichhardt Junior Rugby League Club.”
Mr Pearson said the involvement of the three Clubs in working with Council officers formed a critical part in delivering the facility needed.
“I would also like to acknowledge the many local residents who attended the community consultation sessions on the design and place making components of the project,” he said.
Mr Pearson said in addition to the three regular club users, King George Park caters for local commercial fitness trainers, a six aside women’s football (soccer) tournament, and a running club.
“Importantly, King George also plays a key role in supporting the school sport programs of local schools on a regular basis as well as hosting as many as 18 schools from throughout Sydney.”
Mr Pearson said the new facility is also well positioned as part of a wider recreational precinct that includes the thousands of users that pass by King George Park each day on the hugely popular Bay Run pathway.
“The new amenities block will be of great benefit to the wider community as King George Park is positioned at the heart of such a popular sporting and recreational area used by so many of our residents and Sydneysiders in general,” he said.
The project originated when the three resident sporting clubs based at King George Park approached the former Leichhardt Council seeking support to construct a new amenities block at the sporting ground. Council contributed $975,000 and also received $25,000 towards the project from the NSW Government’s Sport and Recreation grant program.
The new amenities block at Rozelle’s King George Park will be officially opened at 11am on Saturday 27 May with a community event.
