Inner West welcomes City of Sydney support for marriages in Town Halls

Tuesday 24 October 2017

Mayor of Inner West Council, Darcy Byrne said it was heartening to see the City of Sydney follow the Inner West lead and grant same-sex couples free weddings in council venues.

“I’m pleased the City of Sydney has followed our lead,” he said.

“It is a going to be a great period of celebration in inner Sydney after same sex marriage is legalised.

“It is important that the inner west lead the national charge for civil rights as it is home to one of the largest and proudest LGBTQI communities in Australia.

Mayor Byrne said Inner West Council would invite same-sex couples to marry free of charge in Council’s beautiful heritage halls and community centres for 100 days if marriage equality is legislated.

Council has been running an awareness campaign on social media, is flying flags from key council buildings, and has installed rainbow banners across the LGA to urge local residents to support the vote for equal rights and Vote Yes in the marriage equality postal survey.
