Bread and Circuses at Chrissie Cotter Gallery

Wednesday 16 August 2017

The beauty and horrors of contemporary life are the general themes behind the next exhibition to feature at Chrissie Cotter Gallery.

Bread and Circuses is a joint show by artists Sharon Kitching and Bernadette Boscacci, and explores human play, colloquial humour and the thrill of creation through assemblage, sculpture,
paintings and drawings.

The show includes artist-led community workshops with a focus on making works from recycled and found materials, and creating drawings based on the resulting sculptures.

The artists say they have a “mutual interest in the quirkiness of human nature”.

“Humour plays a big part in our works, unpredictable compositions brought about by the materials we’re using and our random conversations as influenced by local happenings, personal and political perspectives and…social media,” they say.

Sharon and Bernadette say their art looks “at all the distractions humans turn to, while continuing to sail down the river of denial; war, religion, sport, hoarding and consuming.

Bernadette says she’s “obliquely exploring themes that comment on culture, nature and history e.g. metamorphosis, entropy, mortality, the absurdity and follies of human nature, practices of war and cultural development.”

Sharon comments, “My work is based on observational drawings, mixed with stories about loss, and pathos. Themes of denial and isolation run though my work, growing from Australian ghost stories, and tales of lost children.”
