Bay Run separate pathway extension open for summer

Friday 15 December 2017

A 500 metre extension of separated pathway for cyclists and pedestrians on the Bay Run from the new Iron Cove Creek Bridge to UTS Rowing Club Haberfield was officially opened this week.

Jointly funded by Council and Roads and Maritime Services, Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne joined State MP for Drummoyne John Sidoti in unveiled the $1.085 million extension this week just in time for the summer holidays.

Cr Byrne said that the Bay Run is one of the most popular harbourside tracks in Sydney and is used by Sydney-siders of all ages.

“This new twin pathway section of the Bay Run will be a fantastic asset for our community as it extends the section of the track that separates cyclists from pedestrians.

Mr Sidoti commended the NSW Government and Inner West Council for their collaborative approach to the project.

“This is a great outcome for the community and it is a great example of what the government and local councils can achieve when they work together for the interests of the people,” he said.

“I am pleased to have advocated for this funding that will transform the Bay Run for the 15,000 people that use this track every week.”

The new path includes:

  • A new 4.5m to 5m wide asphalt path for cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Planting of trees and shrubs on either side of the path.
  • Garden beds separating the cycleway from the walkway where possible.

The Bay Run is a social, family-friendly walk or run that travels approximately 7kms around the shores of the Iron Cove Bay.

Following the entire natural course of the cove and never deviating more than 20 metres from the water, the flat, well-maintained track is also bicycle, pram and dog friendly, with lanes for walkers and cyclists clearly marked where possible.

It is an enclosed loop, meaning users can start and finish in exactly the same location. Popular places to start and finish include King George Park, Leichhardt Park or Callan Park.
