Amy Large Volunteer of the Year awards

Friday 14 July 2017

Inner West Council’s 2017 Amy Large Volunteer of the Year is Demetra Proestos.

Ms Proestos is also the Adult Volunteer of the Year.

The awards were announced last night at Leichhardt Town Hall.

Demetra has been a volunteer in the Linked-In youth program for the past four years. The program aims to empower and support young female students, to keep them engaged, tap into their leadership skills and encourage community participation through a series of activities supported by a group of mentors.

“I’m told that all the students who have participated in the program naturally gravitate towards Demetra and are able to connect with her in a genuine and authentic way,” said Inner west Council Administrator Richard Pearson.

“Her colleagues say that Demetra's knowledge and skills of the youth sector have allowed them to enhance and further develop the program,” Mr Pearson said.

Demetra is also a committed and dedicated mentor and Manager of the Balmain PCYC.

“Her willingness to step up and lead programs and provide access to the PCYC space has been an incredible asset to the program and to the development of local young people,” Mr Pearson said.

Other awards on the night went to Young Volunteer Alan Huynh, Senior Volunteer Manuel Flores Videla, and Volunteer Team/Group Feel the Love 2017 – LGBTIQ Working Group.

“There was a strong field and all the award winners are people of very high calibre who contribute so much to our community,” Mr Pearson said.

The inaugural awards honour local resident and much loved volunteer Amy Large who passed away in 2015.
