Sydney Fringe 2016 at Marrickville Library and History

Inner West Council’s Marrickville Library and History will work with arts and community organisations to present Sydney Fringe Festival 2016 events.

The six events as part of the Sydney Fringe Festival 2016 program include, A Self-Publishing Roadmap, Reading to Dogs, Bibliotherapy sessions (presented with The School of Life) and Lafcadio: A Ghost Story and Lafcadio: A Ghost Story workshop.

Saturday 3 September: At the Self-Publishing Roadmap event, Journalist and writer Steven Lewis will separate hype from reality and lay out the steps needed to get from finished manuscript to self-published book, discussing marketing and promotion along the way.

Saturday 3, 10 and 17 September: Presented with Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, Reading to Dogs will give kids aged 4-12 the unique opportunity to read stories to adorable companion dogs. Reading to animals is proven to boost verbal ability and develop social skills. Gaining popularity overseas because of the far-reaching benefits, Sydneysider’s now have a chance to get in on the action.

Saturday 24 September: Life’s too short for bad books – but with a new book published every 30 seconds, it can be hard to know where to start. Enter Bibliotherapy – The School of Life’s prescription reading service. In either a one-on-one or group session, a Bibliotherapist from The School of Life will provide insight into books based on interests and desires. Sessions are $25 (plus booking fee). Thursday 29 September: Lafcadio: A Ghost Story is an enthralling physical comedy that will have the audience gasping and giggling in equal measure. Held in Marrickville Town Hall, the show for 5-12 year olds is a hilarious reimagining of Kwaidan, an anthology of ghoulish Japanese tales by Lafcadio Hearn. Accompanying Sean is Taikoz’s Sophie Unsen and her little friend the taiko, Japanese for ‘big drum’. Sophie’s taiko creates a thrilling live soundtrack to the spooky silliness of Sean’s storytelling.

Following Lafcadio: A Ghost Story, there will be a hands-on workshop, introducing kids to other spine-tingling books and authors. Attendees will get creative, and devise a scary story of their own. Bookings taken separately to main Lafcadio event.
