New dog off leash trials

New dog off leash trials have commenced in four more inner west parks.

The new off leash area trials are in Petersham Park, Mahoney Reserve, Morton Park, and Johnson Park.

The latest trials come after the successful introduction of off leash areas in many other Inner West Council parks.

Most existing off leash areas were preceded by trials of about six months duration, and were approved by Council after extensive community consultation.

Overwhelmingly, the feedback has been positive. Inner West Council now has 40 off-leash areas in local parks.

The latest trials are scheduled to finish at the end of April 2017. They will be followed by an evaluation process, the outcomes of which will be reported to Council to determine a longer term position.

An exception is Mahoney Reserve where the trial will continue until June 2017 in order to include feedback from winter season sports users.

Council’s approach to equitable access to parks for people with pets is based on:

Safe and shared use of parks and open space
The development of facilities to meet the needs of residents and their pets
Ongoing management of pet access in parks and open space
The use of Council parks by dog owners is encouraged by Council because it creates a positive sense of community.

Inner west pet owners are welcome to connect and share information via the Inner West Pets Facebook group.
