Help Council develop a Statement of Vision and Priorities

Inner West Council’s draft Statement of Vision and Priorities is now open for comment.

The Statement is a requirement of the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) for all newly merged councils.

The draft Statement, which was created over a three month period using extensive community and staff input, was adopted at last week’s Council meeting.

“This Statement will guide Council until a single Community Strategic Plan is developed for the inner west,” Administrator of Inner West Council Richard Pearson said.

“I want to thank the over 1,700 people who participated in the community engagement and all the staff who then developed the draft Statement.

“I think this is a really valuable document that also makes for interesting reading. This is all about not only what Inner west Council is, but what we want it to be in the future,” Mr Pearson said.

The draft Statement vision is:

‘We are Inner West, Land of the Gadigal and Wangal peoples, whose rich cultures, heritage and history we acknowledge and respect. Together we are an inclusive, passionate, creative, vibrant community united in our desire to build a great future for all who live and do business here’

The eight high level priorities that emerged through the engagement process are:

• Planning and development
• Transport
• Social vitality, creativity and quality of life
• Sustainability and the environment
• One Council
• Local industry and business
• Advocacy
• Local democracy

Feedback is invited until Wednesday 8 February. The final Statement of Vision and Priorities will be considered by Council at its meeting on 28 February 2017.

The final vision and priorities in the Statement will then be used in the development of the Community Strategic Plan (CSP).

Work on the CSP will commence in early 2017, and the community will be invited to contribute. The CSP will not be finalised until after Council elections in September 2017.
