Drug Action Week 2016

Inner West Council is supporting Drug Action Week, to raise awareness of drug and alcohol issues in young people.

The Drug Action Week activities highlight the need for the community to get informed and work together to reduce alcohol and drug-related harm.

Recent research shows that:

  • Alcohol and cannabis use among young people is falling
  • Pain medications are the most commonly used drug, either licit or illicit, among 12-17 year olds
  • The number of Australian methamphetamine users in the 15 to 24 age group has more than doubled from about 21,000 regular and dependent users five years ago to 59,000 users now

Council is hosting two barbecues that combine fun activities with useful information about the dangers of drugs, and what services are available for vulnerable young people.

As well as free food, the events incorporate games, workshops using ‘grog goggles’, quizzes and giveaways.
