Spark Youth Theatre - History

Founded in 2001 Ashfield Youth Theatre began as an initiative of Ashfield Council however, when councils amalgamated in 2016, Spark Youth Theatre was born. This created the opportunity to reach a larger community of young people in the Inner West, continuing to ignite imagination, collaboration and experimentation.

Spark Youth Theatre has created many new works in collaboration with companies such as CuriousWorks, PACT Centre for Emerging Artists, Playwriting Australia and the Australian Theatre for Young People. Spark has also collaborated with or been led by prominent Australian artists, such as James Winter, Frank Newman, Aimee Falzon, Scott Parker, Laura Scrivano and many more. Since 2014, Spark collaborations have expanded to non-arts organisations, allowing for exploration of socially-engaged theatre. These partnerships have included headspace, the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW, NSW Teachers Federation, the 78ers, Mardi Gras, Sydney University and triple J Unearthed.
