Pedestrian safety is a priority for Council to ensure that our residents are safe on and near roads.

Look Out Before You Step Out

Council’s Look Out Before You Step Out campaign supports the NSW Governments vision of ‘Towards Zero’ - zero deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads.

Footpath stencils, street litter bin stickers and bus shelter advertising are used to remind pedestrians to make safe decisions when crossing the road.

The road safety messaging can be seen in high visibility locations where pedestrians are taking more risk: in Ashfield, Balmain, Dulwich Hill, Enmore, Leichhardt, Haberfield, Marrickville, Newtown, Petersham, Rozelle and Sydenham.

Each year on NSW roads, around 50 pedestrians are killed and over 1000 are hospitalised.

Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable in crashes, as an unprotected body can only tolerate so much force. A pedestrian hit by a car travelling at 50km/h is twice as likely to be fatally injured as one hit by a car travelling at 40km/h.

Even if you’re familiar with a road, avoid taking risks, always choose the safest place and allow enough time to cross.

Drivers and cyclists:

• always give way to pedestrians if there’s any danger of colliding with them
• drive or ride at a speed that allows you to stop safely before pedestrian crossings.

Road safety is a shared responsibility – everyone needs to make safe decisions on and around the road to prioritise safety.
