Ashfield Civic Centre activity rooms

Please note that this venue can not be hired from Friday 3 September 2021 through until Sunday 5 September 2021 because it will be a polling place for local government elections.

Ashfield Civic Centre activity rooms comprise 4 rooms available for hire individually or in adjacent combinations.

The activity rooms are named after local Aboriginal community members.

Therese Heffernan (Room 1): Therese was born in Wentworthville, Sydney, New South Wales, and is descendant of the Noogaburra (Kurrajon) people from Goodooga/Angledool area and Yuwaalaraay language region. After moving from Goodooga to work at Coonamble High School, Therese went on to work for the Department of Main Roads /Roads and Traffic Authority in Walgett before moving to Sydney as EEO office manager. Therese has lived in Ashfield for over 23 years.

Patricia Blackman (Room 2): Patricia was born in Queensland under the Gurang Gurang tribe, and at a young age was removed to an Aboriginal mission under the Wakka Wakka tribe. Patricia has lived in Sydney for over 30 years and in Ashfield for over 13 years, and among many accomplishments has recently been appointed as a member of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Lands Council.

Peter Cross (Room 3): Peter was born in Nowra, New South Wales and is a descendant on his mother's side of the Jeringin (Wodi Wodi) tribe, more widely known as the Yuin tribe. The Yuin Aboriginal people are considered the traditional owners of the land which stretched along the South coast of New South Wales, from the Shoalhaven down to the Victorian border. Peter was raised in country New South Wales and moved to Sydney in 1970.

Irene Williams (Room 4): Irene was born in Rockhampton , Queensland and is a descendant of the Kangalu tribe on her mother's side and the Durumbal tribe on her father's side. With her young family, Irene moved to Sydney 30 years ago. Locals will recognise Irene as the school crossing supervisor or more fondly, the lollipop lady , at the Bland Street crossing where she worked for 16 years.
