Inner West condemns Greenlife arrogance and offers new Fair Day location

MEDIA RELEASE

INNER WEST MAYOR DARCY BYRNE

The comments from Greenlife Resource Recovery that the asbestos crisis across Sydney is not their problem is the height of arrogance and should be retracted.

In response to Mardi Gras Fair Day in Victoria Park being cancelled today due to asbestos contamination, we are also ready to make our Inner West Parks available so that the event can proceed.

Yesterday a spokesperson for Greenlife told the Daily Telegraph that the growing asbestos crisis is “not my client’s problem”.

Such an arrogant statement from the company is on par with Scott Morrison not holding a hose.

Asbestos contamination has been discovered at more than 20 sites across Sydney where Greenlife has been the supplier of mulch.

I am not going to pre-empt the findings of the Environmental Protection Authority’s investigation and neither should Greenlife.

For this business to state that this unprecedented public health threat is not their problem is disrespectful to the thousands of people effected by this contamination and park closures.

The cancellation of Fair Day is a big blow to the LGBTIQ+ community. The event has been hosted at Camperdown Memorial Rest Park previously.

We can make an Inner West park available at short notice to ensure the event can proceed this Sunday.
