Leichhardt Park's Skate Park opens

Much-anticipated skate park finally opens in the Inner West after years of Council and community advocacy

Huge crowds are anticipated to celebrate the long-awaited opening of the brand-new Leichardt Park Skate Park with skateboard demonstrations, music, facepainting and a BBQ this Saturday July 15.

“For more than a decade I have been advocating alongside local young people to win approval and funding for this much-needed recreational facility”, said Mayor Darcy Byrne.

“Along the way we have had to overcome ongoing refusals from the former NSW Government, as well as incorrect negative stereotypes about young people from various opponents of the facility being built at all.  I am pleased to advise the public campaign and legal challenge against the Skate Park from a prominent nearby business was unsuccessful. Today, the community has won”, said Mayor Darcy Byrne.

The Leichhardt Park Skate Park includes:

  1. A top-class skating bowl that can be used for skateboarding, bike riding and scootering
  2. A new shared path connecting to Leichhardt Pool to maximise safety
  3. LED Lighting to ensure visual surveillance and safety
  4. New landscaping including the planting of another 180 trees nearby in the Inner West’s first “micro-forest.”

“Children and young people in our community deserve recreational facilities that help to keep them happy and healthy. The Leichhardt Park Skate Park will do exactly that,” said Mayor Darcy Byrne.

This Skate Park has been actively supported by local school communities, parents and youth advocates. It will provide children and young people a facility that will be a well-utilised asset for many years to come.
