Inner West Council launches Perfect Match artwork audio descriptions

Thursday, 15 December 2023

Inner West Council is proud to launch a brand-new initiative, the audio description of 20 Perfect Match street artworks in the Inner West.

Audio description is an objective narration of the visual elements in an artwork and is designed to support people who are blind and low vision as well as people with print, learning and physical disabilities to access visual artworks and projects.

With this initiative, 20 iconic street artworks throughout the Inner West are now able to be enjoyed by more urban art lovers than ever.

Listen along to the familiar voice of Nas Campanella, ABC Disability Affairs reporter, as she narrates the descriptions written by industry leaders Vision Australia.

Mayor Darcy Byrne says “Our Perfect Match program has created the best outdoor art gallery in Australia. It’s fantastic that we can improve the accessibility of 20 of our extremely popular artworks. By working with Vision Australia we mark an important step in making the Inner West a more inclusive place to live, visit and discover.”

The audio descriptions are accessible online as audio recordings and as large print text transcripts. At each street artwork, braille signage and an accessible QR code takes you to the recording.

This initiative is an outcome from the Inner West Council Disability Inclusion Action Plan, together with the Arts and Music Recovery Plan, a plan conceived by over 250 representatives of the Inner West arts and music sectors during the 2022 Arts Summit.
