Young Creatives Awards 2019

Thursday, 28 March 2019

The 2019 Young Creatives Awards are now open and Inner West Library and History is again looking for talented young local artists and writers.

The awards are open to anyone aged 12-18 who studies, lives or works in the Inner West. The awards are a great way for young people to get exposure for their work and experience a competitive environment.

There are $500 cash prizes for the winners and $250 prizes for the runners up in each category.

The winning works will be on display at Leichhardt Library exhibition space throughout September.

The panel of judges are experts in their creative field: local artists Hilary Sandeman and comic creator Han Nguyen will judge the artists’ categories; Jo Henwood, Gabrielle Carey (author of Puberty Blues) and award winning writer, Will Kostakis will judge the writers’ categories.

Judges were blown away by the works submitted in 2018 and are excited to see what young local creative talent come up with this year.

How to Enter

Applicants must use one item from the current inner west library collection as a starting point for the work. There are over 1.4 million items in the collection, comprising books, movies, graphic novels, magazines, and photos from our history archives.

Entrants are given free rein on how they interpret their chosen item, for example, entrants can write a review, continue the story, or chose a key point in the story to elaborate on.

Writers are required to produce approximately 1,000 words based on their chosen work.

This year, for the first time, video entries are accepted for the artist category. Artists can provide one drawing, illustration or a video up to three minutes long.
