Council’s aquatic centres a hit with Inner West community

Wednesday, 13 March 2019

Inner West Council’s aquatic facilities have experienced record high attendance levels this summer swimming season.

Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre, Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre and Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre have set attendance records during the recent school holidays and peak summer time, while Dawn Fraser Baths also enjoyed high visitation during what has been a very safe and successful summer period in the Inner West.

Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre is on track to have over 80,000 visits this summer season, a growth of 27% on the previous year. There were over 25,000 visits in January alone.

All Council’s aquatic facilities are enjoying strong enrolment numbers across learn to swim, squads, Aqua Aerobics and group fitness.

Inner West Council has remained committed to its aquatic centres.

While other councils are struggling to keep up with the cost of upgrading their ageing swimming pools, Council recently adopted the LPAC 10-year master plan, and have secured funding commitments from all levels of government to save Dawn Fraser Baths.

The new Ashfield Aquatic Centre will be a first class facility for the whole community to enjoy for generations to come.

The new $44.7 million Ashfield Aquatic Centre will boast a 50m indoor pool with accessible ramp and split boom, an outdoor pool with floating floor that can change its depth, a children’s leisure pool with landscaping and green wall, plus cafe, change areas, crèche, staff facilities and retail.

There will also be a new 1,000sqm gym with new sauna, steam and spa.

Council’s aquatic facilities also include:

• Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre is a wellness centre and indoor swimming pool facility in Enmore Park. Facilities include three pools, learn to swim classes, gym, fitness classes, crèche, café and meeting room.

• Dawn Fraser Baths is in Elkington Park, Fitzroy Avenue, Balmain. The historic tidal salt water pool, built in the 1880s, is the oldest pool and swimming club in Australia.

• Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre, opened in 1960, is located between Leichhardt Oval and the Bay Run, and is a much-loved community asset, with multiple indoor and outdoor pools, modern gym facilities and fitness classes, a cafe and recreation spaces.

• Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre is an open air pool in Petersham Park. Facilities include free BBQ areas, kids splash deck, toddlers pool and 25m lap pool.
