2017 Children’s Book Week in the inner west

Inner West Council is supporting Children’s Book Week with a series of FREE events at Council’s libraries.

Children’s Book Week is Saturday 19 – Saturday 26 August. The theme this year is Escape to Everywhere.

Celebrate Book Week with children’s author, James Roy

James Roy is a well-known Australian author of books for children of all ages.

His Chook Doolan and Legends (in their own lunchbox) books are hugely popular with younger readers. Many of his books have been translated for international readers.

James Roy is also known for his young adult fiction.

Marrickville Town Hall, Wednesday 23 August

  • 10am-11am and 11.45am-12.45pm (primary school aged children K-6)
  • 1:30pm-2:30pm (high school aged students 7-12)

Book Week event - The Adventures of Pelle No-Tail

Classic Swedish children's book,The Adventures of Pelle No-Tail is about a sweet-natured cat whose tail was bitten off by a rat when he was a kitten.

Stephanie and Ann-Margrete Smee will talk about this children's book now translated into English.

The Adventures of Pelle No-Tail is suitable for children aged 6 and up, either to read by themselves or with their parents.

Children under the age of 8 years must be accompanied by an adult.

Books at Bedtime: Children's Book Week dress-up Storytime

A special evening family story time exploring shortlisted Book Week titles such as the hilarious book Gary about a pigeon who can’t fly, Chip the seagull who loves chips, and the very Australian tale of a scorching bush summer in All I Want for Christmas is Rain.

Kids are invited to come dressed as a favourite character from a book and bring a teddy, too.

For 4-9 years. Children under the age of 8 years must be accompanied by an adult.

Marrickville Library, Thursday 24 August, 6pm – 7pm.

Book Week competitions

Children from years K-6 are invited to explore the 2017 Book Week theme, Escape to Everywhere.

  • Drawing Competition (Years K-2): Draw a picture of a place they would go if they could escape to anywhere in the world. 
  • Writing Competition (Years 3-6): Write a short story on a place they would go if they could escape to anywhere in the world.
