Inner West Council wins at LGNSW Environment Awards

Inner West Council was recognised for environmental excellence at the Local Government NSW (LGNSW)’s Environment Awards held in Sydney this week.

Council took out the overall Sustainable Procurement Award for Embedding sustainability into 'value for money', and the Category B award for Communication, Education and Empowerment.

Administrator of Richard Pearson Richard Pearson congratulated Council staff for their commitment to sustainability.

“This is an example of not only our commitment to being an environmentally responsible Council, but also putting this commitment into practice,” he said.

“The Sustainable Procurement Award, which was one of the former Marrickville Council’s projects, crosses over into so many of Council’s activities.

“That procurement policy takes into account not just finding the best price, but also that we are generating economic, social and environmental value and avoiding unnecessary consumption,” Mr Pearson said.

The Category B Communication, Education and Empowerment Award went to the former Leichhardt Council’s On tour: sustainable food, fashion and fun!

The award recognised Council’s revamped online Sustainable Shopping Guide, which offers low-environmental impact choices for food, fashion, furniture and packaging.

Of the almost 3,000 people who visited the on-line Guide during promotions, 63% returned to the site to use it again.

“We are now looking at rolling out these two programs across the whole of Inner West Council,” Mr Pearson said.

“Our residents have told us time and again that one of their key concerns is the environment. They want us to be a green, clean Council that takes steps to reduce emissions, and encourage sustainable development and recycling.

“In fact, just this week (Tuesday night), we held the first Inner West Council Environmental Business Awards, which recognises the achievements of local businesses.

“And Council is committed to keep finding new ways to support businesses on their sustainability journey,” Mr Pearson said.
